Mildred Helms Location & Neighborhood

Presently located in the Upper Clinton Hill neighborhood, the park spans approximately 3.3 acres between Hedden Terrace and Seymour Avenue, behind Achieve Clinton Hill Charter School. Additionally, this site sits near residential blocks and local schools, making it easily accessible for nearby families.

A Park with a Community Legacy

Once named Cooper Park, the space was renamed in 1979 to honor Mildred Helms, a dedicated Newark community activist. Particularly, her legacy reflects a long-standing commitment to education, equity, and neighborhood empowerment.

Over time, the park experienced significant decline. During the late 1990s, the area had fallen into disrepair and was underused by local families. Consequently, residents, clergy, and community leaders formed the Mildred Helms Park Resurrection Committee to reclaim and restore the space.

Mildred Helms Park Revitalization & Partnerships

A major revitalization effort began in the early 2000s through a collaborative partnership centered on community input. During this overall process, multiple public and private organizations worked together to transform the site into a safe, active neighborhood resource.

Through a participatory design process, residents, parents, teachers, and students helped significantly shape a park that reflects the needs of the surrounding community.
