The Park Rangers Environmental Enrichment Program engages Newark youth and adults in hands-on environmental stewardship and leadership
The Park Rangers Environmental Enrichment Program by United Parks As One (UPAO) is a transformative initiative designed to engage Newark’s youth and adults in hands-on environmental stewardship and community empowerment. While it was originally developed by The Trust for Public Land, the program is now proudly led by UPAO. As a citywide coalition of park groups, playground advocates, and open space supporters, UPAO works collaboratively to revitalize Newark’s neighborhoods.
The Park Rangers Program has traditionally run as a six-week summer initiative for teens in Newark. During this time, participants took part in park cleanups at Jesse Allen Park, Mildred Helms Park, and Nat Turner Park, while also developing essential life skills.
Through hands-on environmental education, youth explored the importance of indigenous plants and trees that thrive in Newark’s ecosystem—helping them build a stronger connection to the local environment.
In addition to ecological learning, the program placed a strong focus on leadership, advocacy, and personal wellness. Sessions on yoga, mindfulness, and team-building encouraged holistic growth, both mentally and physically.
The Park Rangers Program empowers Newark’s youth and adults to become advocates for environmental justice. Through hands-on learning, participants gain leadership skills while tackling urgent environmental challenges in their neighborhoods. As a result, the program promotes sustainable practices that enhance both community health and long-term resilience.
In a city shaped by its industrial past, access to green, open spaces remains limited. To address this, the Park Rangers Program works to reclaim and revitalize neglected areas, improve air quality, and better manage stormwater. By investing in Newark’s green infrastructure, UPAO fosters stronger community ties and helps build a healthier, more sustainable future.
